The Science of Pet Sight
The way animals see colors comes down to specialized cells in their eyes called cones. Humans are trichromatic, meaning we have three types of cones: one sensitive to red, one for green, and one for blue. Our brains interpret the signals from these cones to create the full spectrum of colors we see.
Dogs and cats, on the other hand, are dichromatic. They only have two types of cones. This means their color vision is similar to someone who is red-green color blind, only seeing part of the spectrum.
So, what do they see?
While they don't see the rich vibrant reds and deep greens we do, they are excellent at perceiving:

Blues: Shades of blue are quite clear to them.

Yellows: Bright yellows and muted yellows are easily distinguishable.

Greens (sort of): They perceive yellows and greens more similarly, but they do see a muted yellow-green tone.
Essentially, their world is a more muted color landscape of yellows, blues, and grays. They are actually far superior to us at seeing in low-light and detecting motion—essential survival skills!—but color isn't their main way of navigating. They rely heavily on scent and sound, too.
